The heart of the Villagepump is the patented automatic 5-way valve-unit. The valve controls flow, inlet pressure and backwash cycles. The main valve is operated by power-magnets and a powerful spring.

The Villagepump is tested in the Amsterdam municipal drinking water laboratories and on various sites in Suriname, Mali, Zambia, Indonesia, India and Malaysia. Water can be pumped up from a surface water source, but it can also be installed on a well or bore-hole. In such a case the device can pump up water from depth up to 30 meters. 100 Villagepumps will be installed in 2013 providing clean drinking water for over 30.000 people.
